Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor

Abstract
Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor (GM-CSF) is a hematopoietic regulator of human white blood cells. There has been great interest in studying this protein to determine more about its biological function as well as to ascertain its possible value as a therapeutic agent for antitumor therapy and control of immune system deficiencies.
The difficulty of obtaining sufficient quantities of purified natural GM-CSF has led to interest in expressing GM-CSF gene in E. coli, yeast, and animal cells. Most of recombinant GM-CSFs have been expressed as secreted glycoproteins from the cells. Use of rGM-CSF has aided in investigating its biological activities such as neutrophil migration inhibition factor activity and the formation of multipotent colonies containing granulocytes, monocytes, and megakaryocytes. This review discusses the gene cloning, the protein characterization, and the clinical experimental results of rGM-CSF.
